About the item

Gispen, one of the most well-known Dutch brands for modernist design, has employed many designers to work with in the past. Names such as Willem Gispen (himself)  Wim Rietveld and Andre Cordemeyer are among the more well-known. Less known is Coen de Vries.

However, less known doesn’t mean less desirable. Coen de Vries designed some remarkable pieces for Gispen in the 60s. Probably most noticeable designs have been the 14 and 17 series by Coen de Vries, consisting of armchairs and sofas. In particular the 17 series by Coen de Vries has a stunning design; a perfect example of Dutch modernism; sober and minimalistic through abstract lines and usage of limited materials yet very sleek and elegant at the same time. In this specific case, it concerns the model 1741. This model specifically has no armrests, and this supports the minimalist design a lot. In particular en-profil (from the side), the sofa looks absolutely stunning. The inverted Z-shape of the polished steel  frame really comes to fruition. The angled seat follows this ship parallel and seamlessly. The upholstered metal back frame with an angled seat and backrest provides for a very ergonomical and comfortable seating position. The zipper-pillows, featured in a dark green De Ploeg patterned fabric, are all separate and loose laying on the back frame therefore they can be replaced and cleaned easily. The entire sofa is build very solid and qualitative.

About its condition

The sofa is in good general condition, with some slight corrosion spots on the steel feet. The sofa has been reupholstered in the past and therefore both fabric and foam are in good condition. The fabric at the outer edges on the packframe had some wear visible and therefore have been repaired nearly invisible. The inner fabric of the back frame has been replaced as well (in black fabric) due to previous damage, so this is in perfect condition as well.
